Dr. Valene Garr Barry, PhD Valene Garr Barry is an Instructor in the Center for Reproductive Health Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She earned her BS in Biological Chemistry, cum laude from the University of Texas at Arlington, followed by an MS and PhD in Nutrition Sciences from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Garr Barry is a translational scientist dedicated to investigating the roles of nutrient and fluid metabolism in the development of fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia, respectfully. Her research is innovative, interdisciplinary, inclusive, and she strives to be integrous, impartial and impactful, integrating conceptual frameworks from metabolism, insights from maternal-fetal medicine, and cutting-edge technologies digital /mobile health and genomics to improve pregnancy outcomes in women with hypertensive disorders and those at risk for fetal growth restriction.
In addition to scholarship, Dr. Garr Barry is committed to the mentorship of future scientists, and dedicates herself to supporting those ranging from high-school through postdoctoral trainees. She earned a graduate certificate in Mentoring & Leadership from UAB, and views mentoring as a long-term investment in inclusive excellence, ensuring that diverse voices shape the future of maternal-fetal research.
